Is working in house as a deal lawyer at a big fund (e.g, Blackstone, Vista) as bad in terms of hours as biglaw? What about at a VC fund (e.g., Az16, Sequoia)? I expect it’s not a 9-5 in either case, but is it much better than biglaw?

I’m a partner at one of the SV firms and have partners who have been in house at VC funds. I also know people who have been in house at PEs (including Vista and Blackstone). My sense is that VC funds are decent WLB but those jobs are hard to get. PE is a grind but easier to get.

Interesting. I see the VC firms in SV hire a lot from Cooley / WSGR / Gunder, but no similar trend in the PE side amongst any specific firms/geography.

Depends on the legal team at the VC fund. A friend of mine joined one where she is legal hire number 2 and does more than just deal work, she also does compliance and funds stuff. It’s not a great wlb

I think for the big funds and the big VC firms, their legal team will definitely not be that small. So I think you’d come in to a specialized team.

It is sometimes. This month I was up at 2-3am couple times and in-house deal counsel at one of those sponsors was emailing back and forth. Primarily driven by market volatility they wanted to lock in the terms.

Makes sense.

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.

4PQE. UK. Have been offered a job at another firm but they've only agreed to match my salary. I went back asking for more and have been sternly told that's not possible as I'm already being offered more than what their bandings allow.

The new firm seems like it would be better for the sector I'm specialising in but anyone else I hear that moves tends to get a considerable payrise! I feel reluctant to move if I'm not getting a big pay jump... Is moving for the same pay a done thing?

I’m currently a 2nd year associate in commercial finance. I’ve realized I don’t enjoy a a strictly transactional practice. I enjoyed litigation matters as a summer (particularly the adversarial nature). Also, love talking and advising clients. I don’t want the litigation lifestyle and appreciate the in-house opportunities of transactional. Assuming that I could switch (or lateral), I’m thinking I may enjoy employment (and the ability to defend and train/advise). I appreciate any insight.
