It is just the architecture industry Toxic for people or is it the company I am working for? After more than a decade in the architecture world, I found myself with no motivation and no energy to work. IT feels as if nothing matters, Doing more or less work I get the same 4% raise a year with no promotion in title no bonus no better projects. When I looked at other places to work the benefits were horrible no enough PTO, no sick time ... so is this the reality of the architects?

I don’t believe your situation is unique. I’ve been in one of those companies. I was burnt out after the 2-year long crazy multi family market demand because of COVID (low interest rate) No lack of new work and clients. However the company’s leadership didn’t seem to care about workloads but only care about securing new jobs and clients. We had pay cuts, pause on annual raises, and no promise on bonuses since it was a “scary time” and “uncertain market conditions.” Needless to say I quit.

Yup. Thinking of changing career.

Yeaahh. I havent been working that long in the industry about 4.5 years and learned this isnt it. The long hours the little pay. No culture. High stress. Ive changed to be a layout designer for a gas station company and love it. I design a little and we hire an outside arch firm to do the rest. Much higher pay than arch firm. Better benefits culture. Hybrid. I love it

Unfortunately the “business” of architecture can be extremely toxic. Been in Architecture for 34 years and the best you can do is find an office with people you are comfortable with and enjoy being around. If your fortunate enough to love design and you get a few interesting projects to offset the many uninspiring projects consider yourself lucky. Unfortunately I am all production and Construction Admin and with the advancement of cad and 3d rendering the job has turned more into an assembly lin

The architecture profession has never been merit-based. Until recently it was just a hobby for rich white men. Your ability to advance in a company has more to do with your ability to bring in more projects and bring in new clients (this means networking, preferably with rich people). Learn how to be charismatic and learn how to manage projects. Always take the opportunity to be out in the field doing construction administration, you’ll learn more there than anyplace else. Switch jobs frequently

If you're not enjoying it then it sounds like you need a change. There's lots of other avenues but it seems that most of us architects go through education being told this is the only option we have with our training, and we fail to think outside of the box we put ourselves in. I was lucky enough to get a job in consulting as an architect. The work is pretty dull but I make considerably much better money than I would make in a traditional firm and the work life balance is pretty decent. I'm not sure how things work outside of the UK but other options might be going down the pm or design manager routes, or even development management if you can get into it.

Hi, I resonate with this. I’m 2 years post part 3 and realising continuing as a traditional architect is unfortunately not financially viable. Do you have advice on pivoting into a consulting role?
