Top 7 MBA and talk like your mom told you were better than everyone else.
Go to a top MBA? Easiest way. Otherwise specialize in a niche really in demand speciality
Welcome! Your enthusiasm is highly appreciated. Please take a moment to join the queue from the back with the other 99% on this bowl..
In my perception, it is easier at more senior levels. Top MBA works but it’s risky—it’s a lot of time and money to pay for a lottery ticket! Also, my experience is most of the candidates who get in from a top mba are the ones who would have gotten in without it.
Sounds like you are better off on an expert track
Realistically? Go to top ~12 MBA. An expertise based lateral is possible, but very tricky. If your expertise is legit, connections aren’t critical though. BCG (and I assume McK) looks for top talent laterals in niches we want to grow into (e.g., cyber security)
McK 1 - Let’s say I have a niche, in-demand specialty but absolutely no connections and no way of getting in front of someone to outline this skillset. At a consultant level it is very difficult to differentiate your niche skill because individuals and recruiters assume your experiences are just the same as anyone else at your level. In reality, I have committed an extensive amount of time learning and developing my expertise relative to my peers. This is extremely difficult to show on paper, but very simple to show in a true subject matter discussion or case. Clients and leadership on my teams notice, but that means nothing if this is not where I want to grow.

The how will depend on the why and what
Me too! Glad there are more of us out there
OP what you say doesnt make sense. You are an expert but dont know how to show it? MBB is more brutal and cut throat. The key you need to realise is consulting is based on selling. If you can translate your expertise to sell more work or identity areas your firm can show thought leadership, you are gold. Remember running away from something doesn’t exactlyfix the problem. Find mentors and show value in your delivery, sooner than later, you will kill it
Are you niche skills valuable? If so then you should be able to demonstrate that you are amazing by
1. Presentimg at conferences (internal, external)
2. Leading projects
3. Helping launch new practices in other countries
4. Rapid promotion
5. Re-Defining the field and how it is applicable to the business world
I am in a niche field and was doing great at accenture.
I got my exec mba and got called about 85 times to apply for an expert position. The only difference was that i had a masters.
A mastera is your best bet
I interviewed at MB and I can say with certainty that your reasoning is insufficient. I applied to one as a generalist and the other in a niche area and it just took time to make the connections. But your “why” needs to be more sufficient than prestige.
^OP never specifically called out prestige, he/she just said, “take the next step,” which is generally understood to be the relatively higher earning potential, improved exit options, incrementally better “perks,” and broadly speaking more interesting work. OPs description referenced a generally understood set of criteria given the audience. That your reaction is that this implies (with certainty) makes me question your ability to make inferences far more than it makes me question OPs reasoning ability
All firms including MBB hire laterally into their generalist roles when the cannot fulfill demand through campus recruiting. You need to figure out when that’s happening - BCG recently went through it and interviewed people for BA and Associates roles. So did McK but mostly BAs and only in a few offices.
