I've been at my new job for 3 months and like it. The only weird thing is they go all out for birthdays. Everyone puts in $20-50 and they buy really expensive gifts, like over $100. I already had to say no once because money's tight. My birthday is coming up and I don't want them spending that much on me, and I can't keep saying no to chipping in. How do I get out of this whole thing without looking like a jerk? Should I just offer to bring cupcakes or something?

Can you just not tell them it's your birthday? Or ask the administrator not to announce it. You have that right!

This could get really expensive! Sorry it’s happening.
