I think layover sightseeing is overrated. Sure, you can see a lot in 24 hours, but do you really experience the city? It feels like checking boxes for the sake of it. Istanbul deserves more than a rushed visit. If you just want to say you’ve been there, fine—but if you want to soak it in, wait until you can give it the time it deserves.
Honestly, I found it exhausting when I tried a similar layover in Paris. The rush, the jet lag, worrying about making it back in time—it felt more stressful than fun. If you’re already tired from traveling, it might not be worth it. Personally, I’d save Istanbul for a dedicated trip when you can really enjoy it without watching the clock.
The airport is far from the city, and Istanbul has LOTS of traffic jam, and the historical area is really full and busy. Don’t do it to yourself, if you can do 2 or 3 days layover is a much better option.
Second this. It’s possible, sure, but it’s not going to be a leisurely layover…
It shouldn’t replace a standalone trip but my wife and I loved it. We did a Paris, Doha & Frankfurt layover on trips to my father in law in SE Asia. It breaks up the jet lag and gets you moving. We found it a good way to feel less beat up on arrival tbh

I was there for 24 hours and saw alot. Enough to know i would enjoy going back.
Do it. Enjoy life and the chaos. You’ll have a story to tell and memories. Have fun!
If the cost is the same whether you do the layover or not, would it be worth it to you to do it and then find out if it’s your cup of tea? Then you have an answer if the opportunity arises again in the future.
