If you're in the US, your assumption is probably incorrect. Most employers will confirm dates of employment and whether or not you're are rehireable. They won't say anything else because that puts them at risk of litigation.
If you're outside the US, why are you using this former employer as a reference? I'd encourage you to use former coworkers who are going to be good advocates for you and give strong references instead of a former employer with whom you did not have a good relationship.
They also sabotaged a job I had nearly been hired with. Because 1. It was a competitor and I knew all of the accounts for my previous employer and had strong relationships with them all. And 2. They knew all of my customers hated them because they never supported them when they needed help. I always did. Then they literally threatened to force them (my potential employer) to hire this other guy or my previous employer would, and they'd lose their accounts to him. So, I was told that they found someone better suited for the position. I found this information out from an employee that worked for this potential employer and that I would be replacing because he was moving on to another company after spending 10+ years with the company I was trying to work for. I had 3 interviews, discussed compensation I'd start at, and told that I'd have a drug test and background check and we'd be good to go. Then silence. I never heard when my appointment for the drug screening was or anything. So, I reached back out to that company and was finally told they went with someone else.
