IMO if a company’s lowballing off the rip it’s unlikely they’re going to be handing out big raises once you’re in. Much more difficult to negotiate once you’re already at the table. If they want you - use the leverage you have “I would love to work here but the salary isn’t quite meeting my expectations of the market rate. If you can get approval to increase it to $X, I’m all in”
Feelings are good but with salary you need data. What information do you have to make you feel the offer is a low-ball offer? Have you tried researching what the market rate is for the role in question. Several roles are not paying as much as they were last year or even 2 years ago due to over saturation of job seekers and a lot of them are taking whatever they can get than not earn anything.
It’s hard to answer that question with no details.. what is the job/role? How do you know you are being lowballed? Do you have data to support that claim? And how much are they offering vs. how much should that job pay (again need data)?
Standard advice is if they’re not offering 20% more than your current salary, walk away. You can get pretty aggressive in negotiations if you’re prepared to walk and actually follow through
Unless you need it then don't take it
Why do you have those feelings. I was interviewing pretty seriously about a year ago. It seemed like every offer was light by a considerable amount. One org offered to up-level the req in order to have a higher pay band. The base was good but the variable comp just didn’t get there.
In the end I didn’t leave and since digging into the industry I found that my employer pays very well. Everything is higher. Base, bonus multiplier, and RSUs.
