45 an hour with 7 years experience is low. Do you state your rate upfront? I also ask for half the payment first, a down payment.
The ones charging that low aren’t in this country
A lot of industries are feeling the pinch of higher interest rates and uncertain market conditions. That’s led to a huge push to lower expenses.
At the same time, clients are seeing the hype about GenAI and thinking that they can get good work for peanuts. Never mind that AI slop is 99% crud and it takes twice as long to turn it into something serviceable.
I have 2 years experience and I charge agencies closer to 70/hr. Your rates are very low. I don’t know anything about upwork but maybe you should part ways to seek higher quality clients.
$45 an hour is crazy low. You might want to remind your client that after tax payment (including self-employment tax + local tax), expenses (internet, computer, etc.) and paying your own healthcare and retirement, that comes to about half of that, which is close to what Hardees pays per hour. He/she would have to shoulder all those costs with a full timer.
I think if you have a solid client base, it may be time to create your own website and find new clients through other avenues. Do you have a portfolio that features past work and KPIs? You are definitely worth $45/hour and probably more. Don’t let people being cheap determine your rate!
I charged 115/hour two years ago as a Sr. writer at an IPG agency
$45/hour is super reasonable (I am based in Canada, and that's on the higher side based on what I have seen), especially if you work with agencies and not directly with clients. If you are working directly with a client, you could charge a bit more most likely. However, it is really important to understand market conditions and look at what the average salary for a copywriter is in your area. It would also be a good idea to get away from Upwork - there are too many people charging $20/hour or less on that platform so it's hard to compete.
Some folks on here want to suggest charging $70/hour or more - that is way too high where I am and it would be tough finding work at that rate here. Maybe in some places that is reasonable though.
I am a senior copywriter and have charged upward of AUD$120-150 an hour. I think it is about working out a balance between what you NEED and what you would be HAPPY with for the work you are doing. My recommendation would be NOT to compromise and have solid conviction in your abilities (demonstrated by ROI for the client). Walk away from client when they don't value your work and the results it brings.
