Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

It can be a double-edged sword. It depends a lot on the company. They have a new budget to work with, which can be in your favor, but they also might not have been approved for much of one this year either.
When you really want to get in-depth, earnings reports, stock prices, and any recent press releases can help you make an educated guess on that. If I’m looking solely for the biggest bump I can get, those extra steps help.
I know a lot of people talk about applying for jobs during certain periods and it being easier to negotiate… However I've never really found this to be the case. I've gotten jobs at all times of the year and they're negotiated every single time without issue. I think it's more about the needs of the company, not just whatever quarter it happens to be in.
Very fair - thank you!
That’s a good way to think of it
