This is what is missing in our industry today. You can blame a lot of things, but Covid did not help us. With work from home you sit at a desk at a screen all day. Holding companies, equate activity on your laptop as “proof of work.” I hate when the first thing creatives do - instead of think- is go to their laptop and start to DO. A few years back we would tell teams to get out of the office, go for a walk, go for a coffee, go to the art museum. Go get inspired. Half of the fun of being in the office was sitting around doing “nothing,” but what we were really doing was connecting, talking, concepting. You can make fun of the pool tables and foosball tables all you want, but we were doing better work. If your brain is constantly engaged with a laptop, or a meeting, you are not giving it time to ruminate. Creativity takes time and space.

Your best ideas often come when you are not thinking about something.
Second this!
I wish I had time to find to do NOTHING. Seems like a modern luxury, but yes, in my former years when work was less loaded, I do feel like such blissful moments were what set me up for my best ideas and executions of it.

This is more about how you need time to have your subconscious mind do some work for you. Ideas come when you’re not thinking about it. When you’re trying too hard you’re not gonna solve it

Generating good creativity, is like breathing: you inhale, you exhale. In goes the inspiration, the contemplation, the observation, the pattern recognition, the humor, the human insights, and out come ideas. Just like breathing, you can’t just exhale. Inhaling is half of it. That’s what the “doing nothing” part is for. But “doing nothing” is not a good description of it, because you are doing something. You are absorbing information and processing it.
Unfortunately, nowadays, you have a lot of people who are not creatives and who don’t understand anything about the value of creativity, running agencies. It’s no wonder there’s such abundance of uninspiring garbage out there.

Yes true. We need space to breathe, to reset. The problem in the industry right now is execute, execute, execute with very little “prep or plan” time.
Protestant work ethic and hustle culture has done so much damage to so many people 😭
