While portfolio school is nice...if you're already at a top agency, you should focus on building your portfolio there. There are tons of people at your agency that you can work with. If they are offering a junior position...why wouldn't you take it? Portfolio school is simply building a portfolio to get a job in the industry. Not sure why you even need to think about it.
Portfolio school. Hands down. Diverse perspectives. Collaborative atmosphere. And a break from downing the agency Kool-aid
Stay where you are. The best learning is by doing
Job. Do school if/when you get laid off. Perhaps portfolio school is different, but when I was in grad school the folks with some real world experience seemed the most highly motivated and focused in class. I think they had a better idea of what they wanted out of it, and we're a bit more driven. Long story short, some full time experience might give you a better sense of what you want/don't want so you get more out of school later.
Job. You'll learn more in a year working than you will in a year at school.
The right move will really be up to you. There’s no guaranteed path to success. I’d ask, do you enjoy the brands your assigned to? Do you have an awesome boss, mentor, team? If yes, maybe the junior position is right. However, if you feel portfolio school could better set you up to work on the kind of brands you want to work on, or will give you more time to position yourself for a job that’s a better fit for you...then maybe portfolio school is the right choice. Good luck!
Job. Get the degree in your spare time. It's what i did. In no time you'll be running circles around all the students who are there to kill time till their trust funds and loans run out.
you’ll learn more practical skills working as a junior.
you’ll learn more higher level thinking from school, hopefully.
it all depends on where you are right now in your skills. i err towards working as early as possible. but you better already be good enough of a creative to back it up .
Job job job job.
I’ve never seen a p.school candidate portfolio get past the application to even a phone screen. The work just isn’t where is needs to be, or is too superficial. I’ve worked with a few folks who went to p.schools and the lack of actual experience meant that certain domain knowledge wasn’t there and caused problems with the work.
One copy writer who I worked with on a marketing site didn’t really have a grasp of seo/sto. Her argument was “you don’t really need it anymore, we didn’t care about that at Apple”...where she freelanced as part of her p.school I think(??). I honestly didn’t know where to start even if I had could have responded. In the end the client ended up using the copy I wrote for FPO (and I’m a visual designer).
C2-
Creative Circus is actually a red flag for me on a resume. Ive worked with folks who’ve come out program on three projects (back when I was freelancing). Eventually they all had to be replaced and their work redone.
Depending on your Creative leadership, more often than not you'll learn more and get more experience at a killer agency with killer CDs.
If your creative department sucks, go to portfolio school while you search for a better gig.
Depends on the Agency and the school. Most people say take the job.
Think it also depends on the role. AD,CW or other. For an AD, it’s important to learn at least the basics of type, design etc. But maybe you could take classes while working.
School
Depends on which agency you’re at and which portfolio school you got accepted to.
Should your situation allow it, I’ll vote portfolio school because portfolio (especially Creative Circus and VCU) will open so many doors and help you create so many connections that can help you down the line.
Lollll job.
Portfolio school. Do it.
I'm planning a transition to creative. Any suggestions on portfolio schools? Heard good things about the book shop and Miami Adschool.
Absolutely take the job. The school is so you can get a job. On the whole you will get more jobs from the people you meet at jobs, not from your book (sorry but true). And you wont be in debt. And you'll see if you even like working in effing advertising, which you certainly may not.
You can always go to p school later if you love the industry. (What? I said that with a straight face.)
(ps, This is all null and void if the agency you're working for is just direct or something, and you want to be at a famous place.)
