I've hit my one-year mark, and my boss and leaders often praise my contributions. As my review nears, I'd like to discuss compensation. A recent job posting for an open role within my team shows a salary range of $130k-$195k. My current pay is $5k below that. I'm hoping to reach the 25th percentile, at least. How should I bring this up?

You could mention the job posting and the disparity with your own pay, but it may not be a good move to make that the centerpiece of your case. Better to focus on your own contributions, note the praise you've received, and be prepared to talk up the work you've done. After establishing that, perhaps you could bring up the salary band and suggest where you'd like your salary to be.

This!! Seconding all of it

An open role within your team may not be your same role, is that the case? Are you thinking you want to post for that other role and that your kudos from leadership and your boss will help you make that case for posting for the job? Having a salary in mind with research is what matters. You don’t even know if that range is too high too low for that role and that level in your area or state or nationally.

Remember if this is a role you post for, pay doesn’t have anything to do with it unless you’re offered the job, but you need to be prepared in any case right?

It’s fair to ask, especially since you’re already performing well and getting recognized. Just be mindful that internal ranges sometimes include room for different levels of experience. I’d still bring it up confidently and ask where your current compensation fits within that range and what the pathway looks like to get to the next level.

Straight on! You let them know what you are looking for and that you have done your research

Additional Posts in Salary Negotiations

I'm working in the US under H1B, I got a chance to face an interview for another company. My current company started the PERM application also and results will be out within the next 3 months. Is it okay to transfer my H1B to a new company? Can my H1B transfer be denied? How long will my green card application delay if I move to a new company and start to apply for a green card from scratch?

Currently I work for a small company that does the construction of small cell utility poles and roof top sites for the major cell carriers like VZW, T-mobile, AT&T and so on. Submitti bids, sourcing material, negotiating price on materials, handling post construction inspections, scheduling sub contractors, notifying stakeholders, coordinating with construction managers - property owners - building management.

I am negotiating an Engineer position in Ottawa. Is 90k a good starting point? I’ve checked Glassdoor, Indeed, and the PEO salary survey, but I want to have as much info as possible. Any pointers are appreciated!

Started a new job a year ago, high performer. My manager suggested a promotion to Product Manager since that‘s the work I’m doing, but that would be a 50% raise. Higher ups decided instead to make a “new role” (not PM), that has no analog in the company and is hard to price via Glassdoor, etc. I feel like this is to limit my promotion salary to something like 10% from where it currently is. Is there anything I can do? FWIW: I have a PhD from top 5 program and am working in that field. Thanks!

I’ve been verbally offered a position at a new company, but the recruiter insists on getting a verbal acceptance before sending the offer in writing. This person insists on negotiating salary before sending the paperwork. Generic benefits, RSUs, bonus info have been provided; it’s all unofficial.

This is absurd. Am I missing some “new way” of doing things? Your take?

I have been in my current job for 1 year now as a booking coordinator for a logistics company. When I started I had no idea of what my workload would be, now I noticed that my coworkers took the opportunity to pass most of their job to me. I’m currently in a lease admin type role, in commercial real estate. I make a base salary of $50.5K with about $9k in bonuses. I’ve continuously received 7-10% raises over the last 3 years. I anticipate getting a promotion this year and would like to get closer to $60k for my base salary. I’m the only person in my role at the company and have been a key person in developing our team as we look to expand. Is this unreasonable? Is there a normal increase given with promotions? Thanks in advance!

I renegotiated my start date and it’s different from the date I signed on the offer letter. Do I need to request a revised offer letter or is the email thread with the recruiter sufficient. By the way, my background check is already in progress.

Do you still have opportunity to negotiate salary when you’re going thru a recruiter and they tell you the range upfront?
