It’s title bloat. We gave people fluff titles to make up for not giving them significant raises. And too many people were fine with it and now we are stuck with too many levels and most mean nothing.
In my mind account needs 4-5 titles:
AM, AS, AD, GAD, and they all need deeper salary bands so that people can have meaningful salary growth and not think they have to jump a level every two years.
THIS ^ 👏👏👏👏
It’s linked to pay bands
Well besides doing everything from entry level and up, I’m also responsible for organic financial growth and managing client tailspin and fragile egos
Couldn’t agree more AD lol. But then the company would have to pay me more right?? That’s where it gets stupid, capping people off for years on end (been the same title for 7 years)
What is VP? I’m too European for this
Come on, I think you know the word VP means vice president lol
Clients also want to feel they are working with someone senior vs junior staff so everyone above an AS has a VP in their title.
Clients don’t want a newb with less than 5 years managing their million dollar work.
In some agencies it’s linked to pay and benefits. For example omnicom VPs get 5 additional days of vacation in the US. Nothing more
I should clarify, yes, in some instances the “officer” titles (VP, SVP, EVP) are also aligned with things like PTO, bonus eligibility, etc.
But in the era of way less bonuses and unlimited PTO, it’s increasingly not the case.
I’m also in no way denigrating folks with extra letters in their title! But within my agency, creative shop within a Hold Co, this is mostly the case.
Thankfully, I was empowered by our finance and HR folks to address salary ranges and normalize more regular 12-18mo raises. So I’m hopeful that we are able to make a dent in making sure folks are equitably paid.
This! This is exactly why I asked the question. It’s bullshit letters added to a title that doesn’t actually shift the job description by adding more autonomy, leadership responsibilities. It just dilutes the letters which is a shame.
At some companies it signifies access to a different bonus pool than standard folks
I want working with you
