I feel like there’s significant upside if you want it but I also see the value in learning to be content. That doesn’t mean no ambition. At what point is enough, enough? There’s life outside of career too.
Enough is enough is a very subjective thing to consider. It’s about prioritizing what you want out of what years of life you have left and doing that instead or while working.

After having kids I stopped searching for the “why.” My why now is my kids. Stable work, good insurance, raises every year. Promotions every few years.

Kids. My kids are more important that personal success. I'm glad I can work a flex schedule and contribute financially our family, but having a balanced life for them is way more important to me than climbing a ladder.
Contrary to some of the comments above, I had kids, and became more ambitious. I coach sports teams and am able to make it to all the important stuff, but I’m not able to make it to everything and don’t get as much time with my kids as I’d like.
My wife works part time though and is really able to be there for all of it. I think there’s room in a family for one parent to be career driven, but not two. I hope my kids see a positive example from my work ethic and ambition and benefit from the hard work I put in to secure their futures.
