@op: main tasks to getting started:
1) legal & accounting - set up a legal entity such as llc, c Corp, or s Corp. I've heard the same recommendation for s Corp, too, but it depends on your income and recent tax law changes may have made llc more advantageous. You can always make out more complex later. Legalzoom and a local cpa should get you thru all this, including state, county, city and or local taxes.
2) financial - expense tracking, time tracking, invoicing expensify and getharvest or QuickBooks (although I dumped QuickBooks bc they are not focused on small business success)
3) liability insurance including additional coverage for errors and omissions
4) laptop, desk, dedicated space at home
5) get clients
Not all in that order.
Have plenty of savings as it frequently takes 6-8 weeks to get paid
Hi, I created a network dedicated for independent consultants. We can help you to make the jump (2ps dot com) or contact me.
Get at least one paying gig first. It can take a while to land your first one. Contracting through a bigger staffing firm can be a good way to start like a CDI, Collabera, Kforce and many others. They have a network of clients that they match you up with.
Loic, want to set up a time to talk? I've been an independent consultant for almost a year doing salesforce admin/development, mgmt consulting for a few years prior to that. Feel free to reach out at phil@rockyrunconsulting.com.

Yes. My switch started when I was still with my employer at a client site. Initially, the client provided cover for me to switch.
Depending on your situation, it may be worth considering incorporating as a S-Corp. This has many benefits.
Drop a burner email and we can connect further if you like
