Do what you like.
Think long term (less about title and more about role) and be open minded about evolving your craft. Variety is good and both lend themselves to each other so seems like a fine path. You have to work for 30more years - pace yourself
There is absolutely NO downside to being well-rounded!! It’s a plus. You can bring a different perspective. That’s one of the things I love about the ad biz. Everyone brings something different to the party.
If you work in digital or social for two years or so (or two jobs), then oops, hey, hello, youre considered digital or social now. In that, recruiters will think of you for those jobs, and taking those jobs will be the best way for you to get a better title and make more money. Youd be going down a level or taking a pay cut moving over to traditional, in other words. So just keep that in mind. Digital and social moves a lot faster--thats because fewer people want to do it. (Sorry but its true)
As far as awards, there again, they are digital or social awards, and the best place to make use of those career wise is with another digital or social job--theyre the ones who will be impressed. Social awards wont get you a traditional job. And finally, I dont think anyone knows how long a career in social lasts. Theres no such thing as a 45 yr old Executive Social Strategy Director. (And do we think Snapchat will be a hot thing in 5 years?) Just food for thought. Clearly I have my biases.
Right now, knowing both is more of unicorn that works in your favor. The challenge is working on big brands and having the expertise and experience to know how to create personas, best practices, easy to understand playbooks that can stand on their own, a POV on KPI’s and tracking. Also the other thing is having an UGC/organic vs paid POV and what vendors provide tracking is also another nice advantage
The role offers cooler clients, more opportunities for awards, good vibe, and people go onto super cool agencies afterwards
