This happened to me 18 months ago. I had spent 24 years at my prior employer. Loyalty means nothing. Same goes for hard work. It took me 10 months to find another job in 2023 which was a bad year for hiring. I had to accept a 50% pay cut and a loss of one level of job title. But I took it because I was bleeding out my savings. And I cut expenses as much as I could everywhere, but the paycut made things pretty difficult. I also made the same mistake of not updating my resume and my LinkedIn profile very well. And since I was so busy, I didn't keep track of everything I had done in my prior roles, so it became really difficult to try to work my memory to put down the things on my resume and LinkedIn profile that I had done over the years. So now I keep track of what I do so I can update my resume regularly. I was also kicking myself for not networking outside my big company. So my biggest advice would be for you to get active and whatever organizations are most relevant to your type of job and field and get active in their committees. That is how a dozen job opportunities have come across my desk in the past 6 months. And now I am starting a new job in 2 weeks that has got me back up to the level I was before. And I will always continue to network and track everything I do so that I can always maintain my resume up to date as well as my LinkedIn profile. Also if I were you I would post things on my LinkedIn profile that are relevant to the type of work I do or my expertise. This also makes you more visible to recruiters via the LinkedIn algorithm that will put you in search results for recruiters when they are looking for people. I can say that confidently because I've had at least 6 recruiters reach out to me via LinkedIn in the past 4 months which had never happened to me before.
Wow, 16 years, that's a long time. But I'd say you must have had a LinkedIn account a long time ago. It's not too late, though. Good luck with your job hunt, and hopefully, your long stint with the previous company brings you some luck.

Going through this too! Almost 10 years at my company and was laid off. It is a completely different world out there and it’s been really hard for me to figure it all out at once. Not impossible, but definitely overwhelming at some points. Will never let my resume and job search skills get this out of date again!
You should set up a LinkedIn account just to be able to search for jobs. But don't expect too much from it. What's important is to get your resume in good shape. And think about networking, sometimes the best way to find another job is just through word of mouth. If you've been in touch with people through work over the years, reach out to them and let them know you're looking for work. Being laid off can be crushing, but it's not the time to isolate yourself, the more networking you do the better off you will be.
This kind of shift after 16 years is no small thing. But you’ve built up 16 years’ worth of real experience that can’t be taught. That’s gold. The hard part is translating all that into the modern job market. With your experience and network, I recommend reconnecting with people you’ve worked with over the years. Your next opportunity might not come from a cold application, but from someone you already know!
