Just got offered a finance role that pays less than I was making five years ago, about $15k below my last salary. The market feels so saturated right now that part of me is tempted to take it just to get back in and stop the resume gap from growing. But another part worries I’ll get stuck at this lower comp level long-term. Would you accept a step back in pay and title to reset your resume?

Take it. The market’s brutal, and gaps are harder to explain than pay cuts. You can always negotiate up later once you’re back in.

Take the job. I did similar and a year later, through networking I just got something else that pays more than I was making before I took the step back. You never know what the future holds

like

Went $30k backwards based on $175k is better than $0k. Market is horrible

Take it and keep looking for something better

If things are in a terrible state financially, I will. It is said something is better than nothing. However, I would stay away from jobs that ask for your current salary.

Take the job! There’s not a lot out there right now. Especially in the pay range you’d want

I swear this was on my mind the other day. I am working for an insurance company, but I want to get back to banking. I am tempted to start at the bottom to work my way again, but I can work for lesser pay at this point in my life.

I did some years back. Bad side was they offered 25% less than what I was earning in the job before then because I had list my job. I told the recruiter I can only do 10% less at the most. 18 months into the job I asked for s promotion and was told I was only at 100% of my current level and 60% of the next level and I need meet up 100% of the next level to get promoted.
I got another job that paid 50% more in basic and about 90% more in total compensation.

I believe the job market is really tough right now personally. I even believe there are firms giving the appearance of hiring, but waiting on what direction the economy will go...

I'm personally getting interviews, have gap in employment from a move and caring for a relative with Cancer....still I at a point that I know I may have to earn less than I did when I was working as a VP, Financial Consultant.

The step back in title can be a bit more worrisome, but between that or the gap, you still need to figure out how to explain it. If you are concerned that you won’t be able to find anything else, maybe take it and keep looking. It’s just very hard to say sit and around and wait for better! When we have no idea how long that will take.

Looking for advice! I was approved to work remotely but my salary will decrease 10%. I received two raises so the decrease brings me down to my previous salary. I was told that it’s due to the cost of labor in the area.

I’ve been with my company for 8+ yrs, I love my manager and the work I do (engagement, recognition, & wellness programs) but I feel like I’m limiting myself since I have the experience, an HRM degree, and SHRM-CP credentials.

HR opinion: Do I have any leverage as a hospital nurse case manager in negotiating earned time? I have 15 years within the organization, left for 10 months to be remote during the pandemic while sorting out childcare as immunocompromised family helped. Now HR is restarting my ET as a new employee. I realize I left, but not on bad terms and I am an exemplar and respected employee. I thought I’d have the upper hand with the nursing shortage but I’m getting the “rules are rules” response. Help!?!
