Old guy here. #getoffmylawn.
this is where education trumps experience. I learned about Monte Carlo methods in grad school (I have a masters in statistics from the dark ages). Some of the underlying principles of statistics and probability are really only learned in school and you need to understand the theory to use them in practice.
I’ll get off my soapbox now.
I think it depends what your ultimate goal is - lead a group at an agency - maybe. lead a group client side - absolutely.
I know plenty of VPs/SVPs both with and without on the agency side. Client side it’s more or less expected (masters or an MBA). it depends how technical you want to be.
the masters doesn’t help until you’re above the manager level. it’s like you need, then put it in your pocket until you become a director.
VP1, would you suggest all analysts do post-grad schooling? I’ve been fighting with myself on trying to decide the best choice. I’m doing great on my career trajectory currently (3 years post graduation and already a manager on a large account after 4 promotions in those 3 years in media) and am being developed so that I learn new skills pretty regularly (currently learning R). So I don’t really know if schooling is my best option. But at the same time, I’m not very strong statistically and know I could learn tons to help me out in the long-run. Couldn’t I still take courses on my own time tho or google around to try to teach myself? Or is there really no replacement for a proper education? Don’t have a mentor currently, so consider yourself my temporary mentor :)
Thanks!
I have a Masters in Statistics. I feel like I am wasting my life in an agency.

Read the mathematical underpinnings of analytics....a lot of math jargon it it’s pretty direct
Following. Where are you working now that you get to work with Monte Carlo?
Thank you for your insight!
