If it walks like burnout and bills like burnout, it’s burnout. Law normalizes misery so well we forget we’re sick until we collapse.
A lot of it is mindset. I used to feel the same things. I left the law to start a business, which was short-lived, and then started my own practice for a few years. Now I’m shifting back to firm life. My attitude is different now. It took some changes in my life in various fronts to get to the point where I can appreciate that what I do for clients has some value. But my sense of purpose in life isn’t so closely associated with the work that I have the same low grade dread I used to have. Successful, older attorneys have figured out how to find value in what they do and not expect more out of it than they get. Having a life outside the law is critical, though.
Why did you stop trying to build your practice?
If you can afford it, take a sabbatical. At my last position, I quit during the late stages of COVID and took 2 months off to reset. I focused on resetting my eating and exercising habits and traveling a bit. Incredible time. I may do it every few years or so.
It’s just the job.
Feel you. Right there myself. Even when not busy I can barely move - think it’s long term burnout and the job.
Can’t it be both?
It's burnout. Can you take a real vacation? Go somewhere without cell service / Internet coverage and be offline and recharge for a full week or two? That can work absolute wonders and give you a chance to rethink whether you just needed a little break or whether you need a change of scene/mindset for work.
