My husband had to do this. It was an eyeroll when we got the email but it was honestly easy to do because he does so much during the week.
I’d pick a different battle, document what I’ve done, and start looking for another job.
I would do it. I work all week. I have no problem explaining what I was working on. They provide a paycheck, if they ask what for, I’ll tell them. I understand not liking Musk and not liking Trump but I don’t understand the hysteria over this. Just answer the email and be done with it. It’s a weekly check not hourly. A weekly check in isn’t micromanaging.
Okay then tell me 5 things you did, right now. Otherwise I’m going to go over your bosses head and have you fired.
I have just as much authority over you in this situation.
Agree- not a good way to motivate.
I picked up something from this Musk request that might be a consideration to help careers.
How much do supervisors really know what their direct reports do from week to week? How can supervisors advocate for us (for promotions, new work, bonuses) if they don’t know.
Working remotely is another challenge to see the work of direct reports and what they are doing. I remember a few “star” Talents in an agency who would talk about what they were working on almost all the time. They always seemed like they were more engaged with their teams, clients and producing better work. They gained visibility. Their supervisor knew what they were doing along with the supervisor’s colleagues. They did get the promotions, placed on good accounts and higher bonuses. May be it’s time to think how we advocate for ourselves and be proactive to enhance our opportunities at work.
The other piece of this Musk/Trump request is that they saw employees had not opened their emails in months. This was a way for them to see how real this is. This would not happen in the private sector. You would be found out in a month and be gone.
I would personally love the opportunity to do this, and I would be every single thing that was actually a waste of time and how it could have been better spent. All the meetings that could have been emails, finally a place to put that! The approach of it is kind of off, but the idea of having to tell people what you do at work all the time? Not a big deal to me.
We already do it - timesheets!
