X5 with the 3.0 straight 6 engine might be more reliable, but overall you’re thinking about the equation right. It’s worth buying up for a CPO / manufacturer warranty, but otherwise, save the money and enjoy the opportunity costs

Of course… my mom has a GLE350, my brother has a E53… is it more luxurious, I’d say it’s more luxury forward with the trade off being fun to drive, unless you add AMG upgrades or bigger engines…
If you’re commuting back and forth to the grocery store, or have a short commute to work, I don’t think you’ll really recognize the difference… if you spend hours in the car, then it could provides some incremental value…
Mine has one for the same reason. They’re terribly luxurious and a super smooth ride. Massive cabins (especially the second row which is bigger than some NYC apartments), but disappointingly small trunks in comparison. It’s obviously not as nice as an S-Class, but it still wows everyone who’s ridden in it.
They’re also heavy as hell. They have great brakes, but the 350 is a bit gutless for me. It becomes more serviceable when using the paddle shifters (I still don’t use the paddle shifters because I’m too lazy to learn to use them, I just plan my moves further in advance.) Lack of power doesn’t bother my wife unless she immediately drove my EV just before it.
Maintenance is pricy obviously.
She’s happy with the 350, but if I bought it for me I’d go with the 450.
3-5 years old is the sweet spot for Mercedes IMO, pretty much the same car that you can buy new without the massive hit of depreciation. You aren't losing out by not spending more.
I bought my C-class coupe CPO after having ownes a few new cars, and I have zero regrets.
BMW X5. Far better reliability, electronics, and power train
