Honestly, feeling ready was less about hitting a checklist and more about confidence in handling ambiguity and pressure. Beyond what you see, MMs often juggle a lot behind the scenes, budget decisions, cross-team politics, and managing up as much as managing down. They’re also constantly thinking a few steps ahead. Observing your manager is great, but don’t underestimate the soft skills and resilience that don’t get talked about as much.
It's not unexpected or even necessarily invisible to outsiders, but the biggest change (aside from leading a team) is having to be more involved with stakeholders - leadership, clients, third parties, etc. You no longer just get to work, you also have to keep a bunch of invested parties abreast of what your team is doing and how it's all progressing. This really isn't as tedious as it might sound, but it does take some getting used to, especially if you're used to working with a good degree of autonomy.
