Toronto ad fish 🤠 I’ve spent most of my career working as a copywriter in London (6 years here, 2 years Toronto) and the market is pretty different here. I’m planning on moving back home but wondered….how do you find work in Toronto? Agencies barely post openings, is the recruiter scene strong? Is it mostly who you know?
Most sweatshop agencies?

Look, accounts piss me off at times, but the good ones are a huge resource. I've yet to meet a project manager that gives more than the bare minimum
Maybe the change has already happened. From a creative standpoint I’m finding that being a CD is more and more becoming about navigating the client relationships from a creative standpoint than overseeing the creative. Many account people don’t do a great job of selling or defending ideas. I think it’s the same for strategy. My experience with PMs hasn’t been great which is part of my skepticism. The mindless drone thing where they have no skin in the game other than client focused timelines and money is what grates me. It seems PMs often become an extension of the client rather than an extension of the agency. It really destroys the internal creative culture. I have heard a legends of one PM that cared about creative and the experience was apparently amazing. But that is not the norm from what I can see.

I’m going to be the lone voice here but… I think this is a very good idea. I’ve seen project managers be much more successful at negotiating with clients than an AE/AS. They have authority when the clients understand that their role is to manage a project and make it come to life in its best form vs try and get the clients to “like” them. I also think it’s good for careers - PM’s have a much longer lifespan than account managers and project managers are respected roles in other fields.
It also doesn’t make sense to prioritize account management in project based world. The clients are moving to projects instead of AOR because they want access to creative and strategy.
I’m not saying get rid of accounts entirely, but make it a senior role vs just having an army of note takers.
In what world is a PM fighting for good work?
Junior AM in Canada is basically project management at this point because real project managers don't know how to mediate with clients...or want to.
I don’t see a lot of project managers pushing back on clients
Let’s be honest, the C-suite at agencies don’t actually want their people to push back on clients anyway.
🙄
What visionary “leadership” we have in this industry. Consolidate office space! Consolidate agencies! Consolidate roles!
How about building a better ship instead of just throwing weight overboard?

There might not be a better ship to build when you’re dealing with scaled agencies…
