I am reaching out to you all and am looking forward to break into Investment Banking from Consulting. Applied to Goldman Sachs via a referral but my resume is stuck after HireVue. Talked to the VO who referred me and he said Goldman doesn’t hire in Q4. If that’s true and still need to be in GS, can someone forward my resume directly to the team? Their career portal sucks. TIA Goldman Sachs PS: I promise a dinner in a dance place in NY after I get hired as a sign of my gratitude 🙈

Either way you go is unfair to somebody. I don’t believe there is any true 100% even way to do things here. You just do your best based on the scenario you have to deal with.
That's true. Someone in here a few weeks ago said they had a doctorate and didn't get a job they wanted.
I suppose that's an eternal question. Hiring based on merit certainly seems like a solid idea. But merit is always, to some extent at least, in the eye of the beholder. And as you indicate, even objective tests can be somewhat unfair as people have had various advantages or disadvantages in terms of background or education. It's a subject that gets more complicated the more you consider it.
That's true, and experience of certain situations but they might not have come across everything they need to know. Someone that's just qualified would still need support to transition into actually doing the job they've qualified for.
sounds ideal, but it is not always fair in practice. If the starting line is not the same for everyone, then measuring only performance can miss the bigger picture. Hard work matters, but so does access. What do you think truly levels the playing field?
Its definitely a chicken and egg situation. Ideally everyone would have both!

Sounds okay, but yes I agree on it is not always fair in practice. Experience goes a long way also, it’s implying that hard to real life situations.
Someone might have the knowledge but they just need to the qualifications to back up what they already know and have worked towards.
