Public transportation is fantastic in Sydney, so I’d try to get to a place close to a train station. You won’t need a car in Sydney. Coles, Woolworths (Woolies), and Harris Farm are the big grocery stores here. Rent is paid fortnightly (14 days). Be careful crossing the road the first few days as I remember almost getting hit by a few cars, and uber bicyclists (from looking left instead of right before crossing).
Newtown / Enmore/ Erskineville / Camperdown / St Peters / Stanmore are great areas for share houses with good transport and lots that's walkable.
Bondi Junction is great too or Pyrmont / Ultimo.
Beach areas closest to the city are Bondi or Coogee.
Not sure where you're from but Sydney is a fun city. Hope you enjoy it!
If you're only here for a short time (a couple of years), then get some place 10-15km from down town. Assuming you're relatively young, then I'd also be looking for some fun as well as doing your work. If you are out in the burbs then nothing is really happening. Rents are high and places limited. You may be able to find a share, otherwise it will be a 1 BR. Check out realestate.com.au for rentals. Good luck!
Sounds like everything I’d be looking for. I’d probably prefer a share just so I can get to know some people and keep costs down a tad, but no problem going for a 1 BR if I have to.
