I was in the final stages of an interview with Microsoft two weeks ago, in partner marketing. Then the recruiter told me they were putting the hiring process on hold to assess the need for the role. Well, then we heard about Microsoft layoffs last week. Seems like most were in Xbox and Project Alpha but there’s not a lot of information out there. Should I hold out any hope that I’m going to get this job? Any insights on how much these layoffs have impacted the marketing org and/or new hiring?

Unfortunately it's pretty normal. I'm often having to do product management, sales, administrative work, and random QA stuff as part of my job. It would be great if I could focus only on marketing but we tend to be pulled in a lot of directions because nobody knows what marketing is.
I would say it’s completely normal, especially on the sales operation side. Marketing and sales have to work hand-in-hand to have a successful business. At our company, the marketing team creates all of the sales materials, battle cards, training materials that the sale operations team then rolls out and trains our reps to

It can be completely normal depending on the firm. I do tons of stuff outside of my JD, it just tends to be par for the course nowadays
Whats your company size? Small companies do a lot more. If you want to stay in your lane work for a large company and you won't have any chance to dabble outside your JD.
This depends on the size of the company. In previous companies, my role did have some overlap with finance, but I wasn't doing any actual accounting work. Just tracking sources for revenue or expenses and making sure they were appropriately coded. The AP and AR teams did the actual number crunching.
Now, when I was at a smaller company I was more involved, which I did not like because it was not consistent. Leadership could decide they wanted to reclassify something months down the line.
It’s normal but talk to your manager about the evolution of your role
If it’s a large corporation, not normal. However, if it’s a smaller company than it’s normal. I’ve always had to wear multiple hats, but I’ve always worked for smaller locally owned companies.
