I would not recommend doing that if you want to maximize your chances of a good opportunity and career longevity. If you have six months' lead time and you're a marketable candidate, you should most likely be able to find something. I'd recommend contacting an experienced recruiter who specializes in the LCOL market to get the process started. That person should be able to set your expectations on everything from practice area marketability to salaries to firm culture. Once you have an offer from another firm, then ask your current firm about working out of their LCOL market office. If they say no, you have a back-up option in place. Since you've started the process early, you should be able to take off 4-6 weeks between firms (at least if you lateral) to execute the move.

Why aren't you working on this question with your current firm already? If you can transfer to that office, sounds like everything is fine. If not, you start looking for jobs in that city.
Are there people in your PG in the office?
I have no other debt, the city is a LCOL one close to family (I.e., one we want to live in long term), and we have enough savings/investments to float us for several years in the absolute worst case scenario that we can’t find new jobs indefinitely.

Seems like a problem a ways away. If you can't land something in 6 months then you might want to rethink things.
