How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Have the same issue from a bankruptcy clerkship, which I only took to put myself on the radar of better firms. I try to paint it as obviously I’m sharp enough to understand and decide a complex issue, so I’m generally capable in anything. Why I have to spell this out,🤷‍♀️. It’s crazy that firms can’t see that if you’re bright enough to succeed in a clerkship you can handle the demands of commenting on issues in a contract.

I actually wonder, if one exceeds their class year expectation, after proving themselves, do firms ever bump them up a year?

What kind of clerkship? And what kind of firm are you targeting?

It’ll be tough tbh. Definitely not impossible, but I’d try to have a good persuasive narrative around your newfound corp interest. Depends how you define big law, but many lit groups aren’t so wowed by state clerkships (wrongly imo) and that’s probably even more true for corp groups.

like

No advice here, but I had a 3 year state appellate clerkship out of law school and was not given credit for those years. Kind of bothersome at first but I think they expected less out of me when I started. Now I’m “exceeding expectations.”

Definitely the ability to write without extensive redlines. I think there’s a level of trust between me and my assigning attorneys (although this could all be in my head lmao), especially when getting my opinion on filing certain motions. It also helps my approach to cases….I feel like my Judge trained me well in that regard. Like what is the relief we’re seeking? Are we clear in our positions and our arguments? What other information would the judge need from us? Might seem obvious but sometimes these things are overlooked in the fast-paced day-to-day of litigation.

When I left chambers I was so worried that I had wasted three years of my life clerking and that nothing would translate. I swear you are better prepared than you might think.

uplifting

What field of law was your clerkship?

I was thinking that. Thanks for your feedback and for confirming I’m on the right track!
