need some perspective and/or advice. I’m 4 years into the practice of law and generally enjoy my job. that said, I’m in my late 20s and can’t understand how people work everyday, 8:30 am to 5 pm (at a minimum) and actually WORK nonstop, for decades.

I have some days where I can barely get anything done because I’m just tired or unmotivated. then I walk by my coworkers office and everyone’s just typing away, or other attorney friends are just cranking things out. does anyone else feel this way?

What did you think would happen? Pretty much any job is the same (McDonald’s, dentist office, swim instructors, etc) where people are being utilized to the max. That’s capitalism 101. Old tale as long as time, only difference is that we, for the most part, have escaped slavery and the agrarian lifestyle. Our time is finite, and frankly, we have to keep on keeping on and find joy in life and appreciate this life while it lasts. All that to say, enjoy, and if you’re able to, pray to find meaning in life/Jesus, The Savior of His creation.

Have been in your shoes inhouse but generally enjoyed working there. I’d categorize three types of work, at least in america:
1. working to survive: you need to make a living, otherwise you won’t be and have a mountain of bigger problems.
2. working to work: you do it to fill time, you are hesitant of change or of unpredictability and you are getting paid to do something you are competent at.
3. working towards a goal: you are working to learn so that you can do the thing you want to do, whether that is another role, to get enough money to start your own business, or just retire to travel.

It can be a mix of all three, but when people escape the first they can get stuck in the second. Having a goal makes work more satisfying, it forces you to see how to get to that goal faster and to make moves if things are not going in that direction. Don’t worry about other people, they may be trying to survive or working towards a goal or are just locked in and are built for hammering away all day.

If you are surviving but this looks like an unsatisfying path towards death, then reassess your goals and find out what gives you purpose.

AA1 is a lil goofy. Yes, I also feel this way. There are some periods of time where I'm like "heck yeah I'm doing great and so locked in" and then other periods where I'm certain I can't do this another minute or I'm definitely going to lose my mind and run into the sea. I feel you with finding it hard to stay motivated. No advice, but letting you know you are not alone. Also, try to remember that when you see other people typing away, you're just seeing a snippet and it's likely they struggle sometimes, too.

Nobody I have known, and certainly not me, is “on” in the same way all the time. You go through times you are in the flow, times you are distracted or tired, and so on. Totally normal.

I think that it does get easier over time. Also not every day is going to be an “a” day and I think you have to make peace with that. Get good rest when you can. If you are struggling really badly on a specific time or day do things that are lower risk and require less engagement. Do administrative work like entering time, submitting expenses, collate folders or whatever applies for your job.

Law is all about work ethic and I can't imagine that'll ever change. It's a field that rewards hard work and punishes laziness. The stakes are high.

That said, your law degree opens a door for you that most people can't even imagine. For just 20 hours a week of actual work, you can very easily hang a shingle and bring in six figures. It is shockingly easy to make a decent living not working a lot of hours. That's not going to happen in a mega firm or large corporation though - you've gotta take the leap and hang your shingle.

I had a very active, national trial practice (just retired) for 38 years. Honestly based upon your questions this job may not be for you, at least if you want to be successful. I suppose if you want to make decent money there are 9-5 gigs in the law business. But even then, not many. It is a hard job to do well. And even harder with a clock punching mentality. Sure everyone has periods when it is tough to work, that’s why they call it work. And it doesn’t matter if you are a lawyer, an F1 driver, a fighter pilot, a plumber, etc. everyone has days where they think “I don’t want to do this.” But the best prevail despite that - they grind through it. If you don’t want to work hard, you might consider another career. The best and most successful lawyers bust their butts, especially when they are starting out.

Welcome to life. HAve you had your thyroid checked? I use to have all that energy until my thyroid stopped working. Then I started to be like you. If you think it's bad in your 20s wait ti you hit your 50s. I'm on the downhill slope and still can't believe I have 13 more years to work.

Layoffs. Most big firms say they're sitting on a conservative pile of cash - which I believe is true - but work will obviously not return to pre-COVID levels in the short term, probably not even in the medium term. Are Biglaw layoffs coming?

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

Hi new here. Idk what my value is and if I’m getting paid an amount that reflects my hard work. I am a paralegal for a small law firm (family and immigration) w only 1 attorney. I have about 20 files or more in my rotation at a time. I work on various types of cases at once. Some are simple, others are extensive. I feel like it’s very unstructured and one of the managers micromanages. It’s like every man for himself. Take home pay is $50k. I am working on my bachelors deg. Do I get paid enough?

I am lead counsel on a case - we’re suing 3 businesses and my supervisor is a named incorporator of one of the businesses although he is not an officer. He is asking me to bring the file and meet with him about the progress of the case. I reminded him of the conflict and he stated that the conflict was resolved because he also has a claim against 1 of the companies that he recently filed separately. I don’t see how that resolved the conflict…and he’s fully pressuring me to meet. How to respond?
