Context for why I am doing this task, the value or impact, nor understanding what we are trying to solve for with this task. It really demotivates me and makes me so bored. I’m struggling because of this. How do I navigate this with my boss? Does anyone have any experience with something like this? I’m just feel like a task rabbit if my new role - even though I was hired into a fairly senior role. Any tips please would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Are you at McKinsey and your manager is not "strategic"?
Anyway, I'd talk to them openly about how you'd like to approach work, and give some personal opinion/recommendation on how you could work better together to benefit your team and your client.
As a Manager, I'd love if a junior consultant told me this (in the right way, of course)
I’m in the same boat! I have no idea how mine made it to manager
I’m the type of person that your manager is, and people like you frustrate me a lot, but I also recognize that you are needed to help me slow down and think through a problem. I would approach them with how you like to approach work and definitely show him/her how both POVs can help counteract one another to produce a higher quality product
It’s my learning style and personality. I acknowledge that brainstorming and ideation are important, but I tend to be overly decisive and reach my decision very quickly. So I need people like you to hold me back, while people like you need people like me to push you forward so a problem isn’t over-analyzed
Schedule time to align and talk through goals and context
Is it in industry or still consulting?
For context, I left McKinsey for industry.
Have to say that this is how things have gotten done in the past. You have to execute and gain experience before getting into the strategic side of things. The new generation of workers expects more collaboration but honestly that can just slow things down. If work product efficiency is important in what you’re doing, you can talk to you’re boss and improve communication, but realize that he/she may be responsible for work done well and fast. Do ask, but you also may need to adjust your expectations a little too. I have a feeling that quite a few people will have to do that as the economy and job market cools.
I will add that I have an employee that wants some role in decisions and projects, and I have specifically changed things to accommodate that. Efficiency, however, isn’t as critical in the position.
