Why do jobs in the US pay so much more than internationally (particularly Europe)?

WLB is worse. Social services are worse. Less regulated capitalism.

I mean I think rent, taxes, cost of living might be higher here and WLB is non existent in most cases

Consulting is one of few gigs that is better in the US than Europe. Higher pay, MBB Europe has awful WLB. An EM in St Louis lives like royalty compared to one in Amsterdam or Paris

like

Yeah seriously, even Asc comp in St Louis or Minneapolis is incredible

I presume a retail worker, truck driver, public school teacher [insert nearly any other low-to-middle income profession] would agree with the assertion that in the US they're paid "so much more than internationally (particularly Europe)" (when adjusting for COL).

Perhaps expanding on ACN1's point about less regulated capitalism, consider:

- a national myth (in the anthropological sense) that espouses self-sufficiency and individualism
- despite the reverence for 'equality', its worth remarking that it been excessively footnoted, and today, hardly seems to include much in the way of socioeconomic equality (i.e., there's not much in the way of a national desire for low socioeconomic inequality)
- an economic system that, since its founding, through today, relies on providing competitive output through exploitation of a lower class (today, it's a combination of the global south, immigrants, and also the less fortunate locals)

All of this put together, and the top decile, top quartile (which likely is the population for which OP's assertion hold true) can make it so because the lower half is barely making ends meet.

Many European countries do adopt features that force more equal outcomes, and it does involve some forms of distribution of resources (be it income, access to services, etc.).

What happens in the US is that a large group is willing to quickly label it "socialism" in order to demonize it and shut down the conversation.

I think it used to be closer before the Euro weakened with the Greece crisis and the Pound weakened with Brexit. My MBA classmates making £85,000 post-graduation would have been almost on par with or better than their US peers making $150,000 if GBP:USD was closer to 1.5-2:1 vs 1.15-1.4:1.
