If you’re a lawyer you don’t also manage a household. You outsource 80%+ of that and share the remaining things that can’t be outsourced with your spouse. Just like you wouldn’t take two different full-time jobs, don’t try to do both.

The mental load is the part that’s too much?

You can have it all!

Care less about work for the next few years. It will be there when you’re ready to lean back in.

My one note for this is that my last firm was semi-notorious for "allowing" women to go on 50% or 75% and then bulldozing right over that boundary and forcing the same amount of work for 50% or 75% pay. No one who went on this plan actually stayed - they all quit after it became clear it was a sham. Definitely get the scoop on how it went from people who did it successfully. If there is no such person, there's your answer.

I agree with P3. Care less. Lower expectations. From a lawyer who doesn’t make enough to outsource it all beyond daycare - get comfortable with the bare minimum.

My job gets done, my kids are happy and cared for, my house is a mess, life is chaos, we are happy. I constantly choose playing and snuggling with my kids over an organized/spotless house or some other non-essential responsibility. Pick your priorities and roll with it.

Hire all the help! Ensure spouse is on board to split what remains. Give yourself grace. Remind yourself it’s only a season (or a few) until kindergarten. Look for reliable childcare with which you’re comfortable yesterday…

Outsource as much as possible. I’d also say make sure your partner is on board to truly share the load of what remains. Best time to have that convo would’ve been before baby, but the next best time is now.

Get a house cleaner who comes 1-2 times a month, if you’re getting a nanny see if she will include some light housekeeping (ours does 3 loads of laundry a week, keeps up with our dishwasher unloading, and keeps our kitchen organized) for a higher rate, if not you can hire a house manager/keeper to handle those types of things for a handful of hours a week, get some sort of meal prep service.

These have all made my parenting while working experiencing muuuuch better. I recently went in-house (pay cut) and we are transitioning him to a school/daycare at 18 months so are losing the nanny but are making sure we can keep the rest in our budget and budgeting around it because it’s huge.

My in laws cooked for me and watched the baby while I slept. My husband was also very hands on. I slept when I was tired and didnt care about having an aesthetic home until I got myself together (which took about 4 weeks or so).

You’re going to have to care less. You just can’t do it all. Also your partner should be doing 50% - doctors appointments, daycare drop offs, laundry, groceries, cooking. Childcare must be outsourced as an attorney. Find a daycare you trust so you don’t have to worry about them during the day. Hire cleaning help. You will not get as much sleep the first year as you should and your work may not be what it was but you will get it back.

If you can afford it, a nanny is way less work than daycare. Downside is that it's one person so if they're sick you're sans childcare. Upside is everything else honestly. You don't have to schlep your kid somewhere in the AM. They're already at your house when you get home. You don't have to pack their lunch, remember to bring in more diapers, etc. etc. We LOVE daycare, don't get me wrong, and our girls have now transitioned to "school," but in those early days going back to work etc., nanny was the way to go. Agreeing with those below that she can also help with house stuff per whatever your arrangement is. Ours is my favorite person and would help with light kitchen tidy, tidying kids' room, etc.

I recently accepted a position with a new org. One of the benefits I asked about with offer was the parental leave policy and was told (in writing by HR) 16 weeks paid after 1 year, which is as good as you can hope for in US. Now I’ve been sent the employee handbook to review/sign and it says only 12 weeks, which is less than the org I’m leaving. What might my recourses be to negotiate 16 weeks when the time comes? Also, should I be viewing this is a red flag?

My father took a home loan, and the same home is kept as mortgage.
I'm paying arround 22k emi for the same but unable to exempt tax as the loan is on my father's name.

I googled a lot how to transfer it but neither gift deed nor sale deed would work as the property is on mortgage that's under bank's ownership (until loan is fulfilled).
Tax is also getting deducted, I'm paying hefty emis.
What can I do?
Please advise 🙂

As a divorcee with a kid, i find it extremely hard to find friends who can relate, or even making friends as it seems there’s a stigma attached to you because your relationship didn’t work out.

I have a rogue 1st year analyst who is promising things to a client he has no business promising. He shouldn't even be talking to the client. This kid isn't gonna last long.

I'm done with this app. People are talking about that parents don't have the right to know if their kid wants to be called by a different pronoun and keeping things from parents. Makes me sick. I told them they're all fucked in the head. So I'll be booted soon. Good knowing some of you. Peace.

My husband said he would buy me a Rolex as a “push present” for our first child. I would want just a classic, timeless (no pun intended) looking ladies Rolex watch that I can wear for many years to come. Suggestions on a style? I really don’t know anything about them and would like to get some opinions on what people like since there are so many options.

I give massive kudos to all the parents out there juggling work and home life. But it’s starting to feel like I pulled the short stick by not having a kid. Really struggling to pick up all of the slack from all of the colleagues that do have kids and feel like the expectation is that parents should turn off while the rest are working from 7am - 2am everyday to make up for it.

Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

Hi everyone, realizing my career may be incompatible with my needs at home (I have a school age child with special needs). Any moms/dads find any companies or jobs in the UX field that are part time? I am wondering if it’s possible to stay in this field or if I need to take a step back and figure out something new. What has worked for any of the working moms/dads out there. I need to be free from 2pm onwards.

With social security potentially running out, why couldn’t it be an option for the govt to put $5k for every baby that is born in a year into an account Invested in a govt share class S&P 500 fund. Historical average is 10%+, which would provide roughly $2.7 million for a baby born today. Eventually, this would eliminate the need for soc sec tax, and would only cost $18 Billion a year instead of several trillion a year being deposited into the trust.
