So I don’t want to get into a non-parent vs parent thing, but having been on both sides of the divide I can say what you’re experiencing is real... yet, please have empathy for the fact your colleagues aren’t stiffing you to go frolic on a beach somewhere... especially now, all parents are in. the. freaking. trenches. (For that matter, EVERYONE is!) The key is you need to establish some boundaries for yourself. In enforcing them, don’t be super specific - in fact, the more vague, the better. One of my former colleagues was the absolute master of this. “I have a personal situation and won’t be able to get on this until tomorrow morning. Can someone else jump in?” The key is to leave it at a “personal situation/issue” - most people won’t pry further. If they do? “Some really personal stuff I have to sort out. I’d rather not get into it.” That covers a variety of issues, and you honestly don’t need to share more than that, especially if there’s already an imbalance or lack of respect for your personhood. While you don’t owe more than you’re able to give, you have to be the one to draw and hold the line. Nobody’s gonna do it for you.
This is great advice. Thank you.
I hear ya on this. My colleagues aren’t like this but my clients are. They’re distracted on calls, give us half the info we need and then come back a week or so later annoyed about something. We CYA but that only helps so much.
I don’t have the answer but welcome the advice.
No one should have to work that much. Even if you don’t have a kid, you have a life and needs. I see no issue with you saying you can’t work that much as you have personal matters to deal with.
Also, track all of your hours, and don’t be afraid to engage an employer lawyer. Even if you’re salaried, those kind of hours are sick, and can be used in your favor.
