Next Thursday I’ll be helping recruit our next summer intern, and I’ve been thinking about how much impact the right questions can make on both sides of the table.
For anyone who’s managed interns: what’s one question you always ask in interviews that reveals a lot about a candidate?

And for those who’ve been interns: what’s one question you wish you had asked your manager early on that would have changed your experience?

One thing I like to ask is what they are hoping to get out of the experience. Helps me to know what they are looking for specifically, maybe skills in a certain area, or just learning more about how the job works.

That's a great idea!

I always ask them what their biggest struggle has been in their most recent roles. I feel like that is really a great question to find out what they are going to be struggling with most.

Ask them what makes them excited about the role and company (see if they did research and are passionate)

During the interview I wish I asked what the first 1, 5 and 30 days look like. I’ve had an internship where the company was great but the manager wasn’t prepared for me. And another at a much smaller company where day 1 I was jumping into real work and solving problems.

If you have multiple opportunities, ask if they are hiring full time and/or what’s their conversion rate is? It could help you decide between multiple offers.

Recently accepted a temp role as an HR admin for a former employer. Previously interned there & left because my supervisor did not have any growth opportunities planned out for me; this was in spite of my stellar performance, as reflected in my 90 day review. She has since left the company, but there’s crazy turnover in the company & in the HR department in particular. Just that an HR coordinator resigned. Is it worth going back into a dumpster fire w/ no leadership to gain experience?

I’m job searching right now and applied for a job I was a little overqualified for just to shoot my shot and get my foot in the door with a great brand. The hiring mgr took the time to email me to tell me I was overqualified and offered to help me get connected to his network. He’s been so kind and helpful and I’m kind of in shock at his generosity. Even if an offer doesn’t come from it, is it weird if I send him a Starbucks gift card or something as a thank you? What’s appropriate?

Hi everyone, I have a quick question that’s kind of silly. I work at a pretty small company leading marketing. My title is technically Marketing Lead but I want to put Head of Marketing on my LinkedIn etc. I think of these titles as totally interchangeable—I just like the way the second one reads better. I know titles don’t really matter, but I’m battling a little bit of imposter syndrome.

What does everyone else think?

I’m interviewing for a start up and the role sounds interesting. Usually for the “test” part of the interview I’ve had to analyze data. This company wants me to develop a growth strategy that outlines key initiatives for growth, different opportunities, experiments I’d run, KPIs, and working cross-functionally.

Is this a lot for an interview?

I’m a little afraid of doing all this work to then just have them take my ideas and not hire me.

I have worked in marketing for about 6-7 years. First few years were in social media management. My goal is to work at a big tech company.

I’ve heard mixed results about the ROI of earning an MBA. My near future goal is to move into a Marketing Director (or senior manager) role.

1) How much does Google, Amazon, Microsoft, etc. value MBAs in the hiring process?

2) Anyone currently working at the companies above with only a BBA?

Current situation: Marketing Manager, 90k, NYC.

Will an MBA set me apart? I have a BS in Marketing from top 15 undergraduate business program with a 3.8 gpa, 2 years work experience (3 by the time I’d enroll), and scored in the 63rd percentile on the gmat. This qualifies me for an average business school (ranked below ~50). My goal is to move into a management position within the next 5 years and eventually move into a director or c-suite role. At your companies, do most upper-level marketing employees have an MBA? Is it from a top school?
