Non-tax exits for a BigLaw tax associate? I’m looking to go in-house or pivot another firm working in a non-tax group. Anyone know of tax associates who’ve done that? What they pivot to?

I know tax associates who have pivoted to generalist LP-side roles (ie covering more than tax), who previously did some fund formation tax work at firms

For what’s its worth, I’ve applied to generalist in house roles and gotten about half a dozen final round interviews in the last 9 months but I’ve never been able to close the deal.

Hi fishes. I am a third year and I was extended an offer to lateral to an Amlaw 100 firm, but as a second year. Is this common? I am coming from a specialty firm with four offices nationwide with a good reputation in our field. The lateral position is in the same field. Thank you!

They don’t seem quite that “independent” to me and so far, I’ve only had one appeals officer who seemed knowledgeable and nice. It’s been a real headache. Has anyone dealt with stuffing allocation in a non-hedge fund context? It seems even in the HF world the law is fuzzy in using aggregate reverse 704c principles in stuffing allocations. Like, sure, the market is there but no authority really blessed it (other than some Cravath partner’s article in Tax Notes in 2013). If we are talking asset class that isn’t really like marketable securities but might be able to treat it similarly solely by virtue of, say, valuation on a quarterly basis (contd)

Transitioning from com. lit into tax controversy?

I have a tax LLM and started my career out of law school doing M&A tax at a big4. After 9 months, I got out of big4 transactional hell and into whatever litigation I could find. I now practice commercial lit but would welcome the opportunity to eventually transition into tax controversy (which I wasn’t able to do before). Does my commercial litigation “break” hurt my prospect? How long can I stay in com lit without hurting my chances even more?

Junior biglaw tax associate here. Considering an internal transfer vs lateral to NYC from a smaller market. Any firms in the v20 I should avoid/look into? I have pretty reasonable hours at my current firm and trying to avoid going to a sweatshop. Interested in international tax and hoping to avoid m&a. Firms I’m considering: Latham, Gibson, Sidley, Goodwin, Milbank. Thank you all!
