I don't believe in a 10% tithe as a Christian but do believe in generosity. Before, when I was a staunch tither I did 10% on gross income. Now, my wife and I give both to our local church and several other ministries monthly and the total is much more than 10% with a goal to increase it every year. It's a fun part of doing my taxes seeing the growth in our generosity year over year. In a few more years we'll be giving away more than we pay in taxes!
I don't have a church home. (I want one) So I use my tithe/love offering to help people in need or for a good cause.
Must say this is my favorite FB post I’ve seen. Bravo to you, OP 👏
Do you want gross or net blessings?
Lmfaoooooo
Calculate after tax. Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's. I don't ever consider tax as my income.
I understand tithe to be 10 percent of my income. I don't think my income is just a gross number on a statement.
I don't tithe to my church, but I do make sure I'm giving at least 10% of my take home to charitable organizations - some goes to my church, much of it to my kids' catholic school, some to the K-Love (Christian radio station), the 2 kids we sponsor in Guatemala, miscellaneous charities we support throughout the year. I don't really calculate though, I feel like that would be limiting. I ballpark it once a year or so to make sure we're not under, but we definitely go over.
When did KLTY change to K-Love? I normally listen to 90.9 where it has muis and as I am driving to work there is a sermon. I just switched over to KLTY/now K-Love and was shook. I have been hung up on Brandon Lakes music for a while and just listened to it for a very long time.
I pay for the prior service
If it was good I donate extra
If it didn’t help me I donate less the next time I go
The 10% rule was an Old Testament rule. Don't beat yourself up about it. God does not care about 10%, He cares about the heart. The churches that push this are usually drowning in debt financed buildings. Give what you want and don't stress it.
Jesus had his needs provided by the women, and hospitality was given by those he visited. Jesus didn’t make a salary but he was provided for
Rising Star
We don’t calculate anything we just give 100 bucks a month which is enormously beneath the scriptural 10%
Yup. I'd have a million dollars more than I do with compound interest, if I wouldn't have given to these false teachers. But know better, do better. Can't dwell on it.
I do not pay a tithe to a church. I find my Spirituality in Nature and water.
Calculated 5% after tax. I’m pretty sure churches don’t like us accountants
5% of what hits the bank account and 5% of bonuses. Trying to retire at 60 YO and all
It’s about the heart first and foremost. I changed from net to gross about 10 years ago after wrestling with this question for some time. Like others have stated it’s a personal decision and I believe in giving your first and best, before anything else. This resulted in making the tithe pre-tax for me.
Well said.
Also, I heard someone say once, "The only scripture you (collectively) believe in is the scripture you follow."
Jesus said, "Where your treasure is, your heart will be there also." Giving money is definitely a matter of the heart.
At one point, I gave based off gross. Then I changed it to net. Even though I no longer tithe, I still use net to donate to causes that are important to me.
To be honest, I've seen the argument for gross and net. In my opinion, it's basically a personal preference. It's a personal relationship. Sort of like, what works for one marriage doesn't mean it'll work for others.
I give what I feel is reasonable, which is less than the full suggested tithe. I use take home (net) as my base.
More than 10% of gross.
Zero.
Used to pay on pre tax but now pay on post. I think the “correct” way to do it would be to pay on post tax but then add back all the benefits you get from the government. But I also don’t think it’s meant to be that tedious and paying on after tax makes sense to me given how much we pay in tax and how little government benefit we get
Logically, it should be based on the gross. Since contributions are tax-deductible, you’re not paying tax on what you donate.
Even if you take the standard deduction… money is fungible. You’re getting the deduction, you should donate anyways
I do 10% of Gross. I figured the government taxes me way more than a tithe, why should I give God any less.
10% or more of gross
