I’ve been with firms for 6 years. I struggle (not that I’m not intellectually capable of doing this job), I just hate the detail oriented nature of this industry. Everything gets scrutinized so carefully and most things I stayed up late for doesn’t matter.

I just got PIP talk and they are pushing me out next year. I’m kinda relieved. I want to leave law completely and be someone on the operation side. Eventually I want to be an COO.

How do I get there from here?

Go in house (ideally not in a pure legal role, but something more like compliance) and try to work your way into the business side.

like

That’s really commendable of you to admit you struggle. Many of us do for the same reasons. Thanks for being open about that.

Can you leverage any knowledge of business practices or operations from your practice? For example, it is common in my practice area for attorneys to leave firm life and work for insurance companies who were firm clients.

Also, a lot of people may tell you that and MBA is necessary to get to the C-suite on the business side. However, I have not seen that to be true. Your J.D. is more unique and valuable in the business world than an MBA. MBA's are great but not required.

Also, are there professional organizations in a field you are interested in that you could join now? Networking now may help your transition. Good luck!!! I am rooting for you!!!

Lots of COO has a JD. I checked. Of course they are 20 years older than me. I think I would be a very strong operator

like

What makes a very strong operator? Just curious. Law firms seem to put everyone to be on their own to act like a freelancer.

Have you talked to anyone that become COO with a JD?
