In your defense, phonetically it is a weird word and it breaks the general pattern in English of where the accent is placed. It is also one of those words that you typically hear a bunch of times before you ever see it written, so it just doesn't have that word recognition.

Ex, segue.

Saaaaaame lol

I mispronounced secondment the first time I saw it written in something I had to talk to client about. I regularly mispronounce names too, but I’ve gotten better at asking people to say their names for me first. I’m an idiot 90% of the time. Oh well.

I've been a government attorney for nearly three years now and have worked in the same office/division since I passed the bar. I've yet to receive a promotion other than two cost of living increases (in sum, a pay increase of 6k over 3 years). I know this is meager, but I'm mostly ok with it, I just want to see some recognition. On the other hand, it's hard for me to imagine negotiating because (given my inexperience), I don't feel I'd be able to do better anywhere else. Any advice?

What is a reasonable pay increase + bonus? This will be my first pay increase. I make 70k and I will be starting my second year at big law (immigration). I had 2 years of prior experience before joining the firm. My manager rated me highest in all areas and mentioned she recommended me for promotion but it may not happen until next cycle since there are limited number of promotions to give. I will get a pay increase regardless so I want to negotiate in case I don’t get a “good” increase.
