My dream is to move to a super low cost state, buy a beautiful farm house on a big piece of land and work remotely from there. How do I do this? I am a 3rd year associate in big law.

Sounds like we all need a farm together (but not too close).

Corporate? Move to one of the ECVC firms hiring remote associates.

If I named them, who would go through me? 😀

WSG&R, Cooley, WilmerHale, and Goodwin are a open to remote associates.

You could probably pull this off doing coverage opinions for insurance companies. Easy to do remote.

The only problem is you’ll be doing coverage opinions for insurance companies.

Haha! I live in Iowa. I was going to suggest the same thing - Des Moines has a huge insurance
market. Thrilling! I will say there is a decent financial services/private lending sector that have flexibility and permit remote work for their “in house” counsel. the renewable energy sector and the legal issues surrounding the expansion of wind energy and other alternative energy infrastructure is another area that a number of large energy companies will be continuing to seek legal consultation and/or in house compliance subject matter experts.

You’d get your big window though! :)

Hope y’all have a nice big picture window to look out at that land while you bill. And don’t mind setting aside 25 minutes to drive to the nearest grocery store and then setting aside time to cook because even if there is a restaurant nearby it closes at 8. Though I suppose you could try to hire a personal chef, if you can find someone decent enough, and lawncare staff.

Be sure you’re not over-romanticizing this. Go Airbnb a place for a month.

I’m about to give my notice at a firm I’ve been at for the majority of my legal career. They’ve recently offered me non-equity partnership (which I’ve accepted), w equity partnership on the horizon. However, I’ve been annoyed with their way of running the business and getting between me and my earnings far too long; and I received a lucrative offer to go in-house. I’m not looking forward to their reaction and feel bad about them having to take over my docket when everyone’s very busy. Any tips?

Any tips for getting better other than “advocating more”?

How many billable hours per week is considered at capacity? I’m getting pushback on boundaries I’m setting about additional matters and marketing work from my firm when I’ve been billing 60-75 hours per week for the last 6 weeks, and I’m still behind on my work. I feel like it’s reasonable to not kill myself further to fit in more/turn things around faster at this point, but am I being unreasonable? I expect my workload to remain at this level through the end of the year at least.

What is the scoop on med mal defense vs. plaintiff work? Is defense more respected by other practice areas if I were to switch somewhere else later?

Has anyone gone from a complex litigation practice like Construction and/or Government Contracts to a more general civil lit practice (PI, family, etc.)? I'm highly debating making the switch as I feel like these massive complex construction cases aren't really getting me enough solid litigation experience.
