The answer depends on where in Bucks County you’ll start from. The County stretches from Trenton area West to Quakertown. I live near Bucks County. If you’re closer to Trenton it’ll take about 2 hours by car up the NJ Turnpike. If closer to Allentown then on I-78. Lots of traffic. Bus out of Trenton is about 2-1/2 hours. If it’s close, best bet is NJ Transit train (NE corridor line) from Hamilton or Princeton Junction stations. It’ll take about an hour to 1-1/2 hours depending where you work in NY. Trains go to Penn Station. Beautiful area but I think commuting to NYC will be a bit of a haul. Good luck.
Fair point. We were thinking New Hope so we were close (as possible) to the city
Hello! I also grew up in Bucks County! I commuted from my parents home for a few weeks after I graduated college until I could find my own place in the city. They live between New Hope and Frenchtown, NJ and I would drive to the Flemington bus stop then take the bus from there. While it was technically doable, it was pretty exhausting and not something I would want to do more than 2-3 days a week. Door to door was almost 3 hours each way if you want to leave time for traffic or other unexpected delays. Driving to the Hamilton Station sounds like a bit of a better idea though, as I always prefer the train to the bus, but still a very long commute.
Not sure where you’re at in terms of life/family needs, but New Hope is a great place to have kids. My parents actually considered paying for me to go to the public school there (apparently that’s a thing you can do?) because it had great scores/programs and they liked how small the class sizes were. Great trick or treating town, along with Lambertville. Lots of outdoor activities and local community events in better weather months.
If you don’t want to pay the higher taxes in NJ, you’re best sticking to the river towns on the PA side. Hard to get much closer to the city than that!
I grew up in Bucks County. In later years I commuted from Philly to NYC (this was during the dotcom 1.0 boom, that I saw coming and didn't want to be stuck in NYC for) and it was around a 2 1/2 hour commute. It's doable, but it's not fun at all. If you decide to do it, take the Septa/NJ Transit trains into NYC so you can get some sleep in along the way.
I grew up in Bucks County. It’s beautiful, great schools, close enough to Philly/NYC/Jersey shore. I would not recommend commuting to NYC though. If you were to drive to the Hamilton train station from where I lived that’s about 45 minutes, to then get on a train for an hour to hour and a half.
Currently in Fairfield County in CT — so a 50 min train ride is just another day in the life, not considered “long”
Will just call out that there were plenty of days pre work-from-home when my subway ride from Brooklyn to midtown was 50 minutes and I had none of the space of living in suburbia 😂
Had to look it up. So would you drive to Trenton and take the NJT? how are income taxes vs CT?
CSM — yes. I’d drive to Hamilton Station and take NJT in to the city. PA has a lower overall income tax rate
Thanks all, very helpful.
Where do most people work if they live in this area? Philly? NJ?
If considering New Hope take a look at nearby Newtown. Cute town but close to major highway, 95. You can drive to Philadelphia in traffic in about 45 minutes. Most in the area work in a Philadelphia or the suburbs. If you need to get to NY you can drive to Hamilton, NJ, NJ Transit station in under a half hour. Train to NY (Penn Station) is then 1.5 hours.
New Hope is a nice place but the secondary roads are all 2 lane and it takes forever to get anywhere. Good luck.
This is great - ty! We started looking in Newtown but then shifted. I thought NH would actually be faster. Appreciate the insight!
I’m from Bucks. If you live in New Hope, then NYC is doable a few days a week. If not, philly had a good number of agencies and universities that always need help. I love it here. Feel free to reach out!
