Whoa! This guy is EDGY

Banks does it, it’s art. You do it, you get sued by Swiffer.
Like it or not, Banksy is in the ad business. He knows us because he is us. His anti-advertising is his advertising. And he does it really well.
Because it’s Banksy people will give it a pass but yeah this is big “I’m a teen on Reddit and I’m being super deep” energy. He’s not wrong but he sounds cringy. I actually agree with the message just not the messaging.
He’s not wrong….

I like the thought, but what he's saying still requires a general acceptance that people actually care enough to look at the advertising around them beyond a surface level. We're whitespace litter. Not much different than the stick you'd pick up to scrape a dog's poo from your shoe. You notice it when you're looking, ignore it when you're not.
Seems straight from r/im14andthisisdeep

Edgelord energy.
An edgelord is someone who leans on voicing controversial opinions as a personality trait

Totally agree. And I'm not one of those "down with capitalism" people...
I am Banksy.
I am banksy lol
Banksy needs people like me so he can point his finger and say “that’s the bad guy.” What does that make him? Good? He’s not good. He’s just better at hiding. Me? I don’t need to hide. So say goodnight to the Bad Guy.

He is right and people calling him edgelords here are the actual edgelords 💅🏻
Anyways the perhaps more salient Banksy on Advertising quote is this:
“The thing I hate the most about advertising is that it attracts all the bright, creative and ambitious young people, leaving us mainly with the slow and self-obsessed to become our artists.. Modern art is a disaster area. Never in the field of human history has so much been used by so many to say so little.”
Reads like an advertorial for Banksy.
So, he’s saying advertising works? Thanks man!
He is basically commenting on the social contract we all make. The things we want for free often require advertiser support. If we don’t want them for free, then we have a choice to pay for them and not accept the advertising that goes along with them. Of course, when it comes to billboards and advertising in public space, the social contract is perhaps a little less clear, however, you could argue that it subsidizes things that would otherwise be more expensive. Like bus transport.
While Banksy’s comments ring true, that shouldn’t mean we do our jobs with any less enthusiasm. After all, we are upholding one end of the contract.
Love it.
Ironic since I saw a Banksy advertisement on the London Underground this month.

I agree with his points on outdoor advertising, which is advertising forced upon you and the natural environment without permission. You are bombarded by it just by going outside. Most other forms of advertising require some sort of unspoken consent, in the form of voluntarily consuming media (watching TV, reading a website or a magazine, listening to audio, using an app, playing a game, etc).
