Notice period issue, need advice!!

I resigned after my company said my client project was ending. During my notice period, they assigned me to a new client without asking me to withdraw my resignation.

I now have an offer from a product company. My current company refused early release, refused a paid notice buyout, and is now trying to extend my original last working day by a month.

Can they do this?

What has worked for you guys if someone has been the similar situation?
