In terms of pure inflation you would have to make 58 K today. But If you were planning to buy a house, you would need a whopping 250 K more (assuming a house that was worth 400 K in 2017). That is the biggest purchase anyone makes. Just using that as a metric, I can see why someone may think they will need to make 100 K.
And there are several metrics like that.

Lol I'm a millennial. And i don't own a house

> "I got my first grown up, post college job in 2017, I was earning $38,000 a year."
Perhaps take into account the fact that $38.000 a year doesn't get you much in today's economy. The days of being able to support a family of 4 on a single low to mid level income are gone, so of course newer generations expect more. Mike Monteiro has a great video on getting paid; I actively encourage people to watch it, then stick up for their worth when applying or working for any employer.

if you get into the right field that’s not far off.
first job out of college I made 89k in 2017. Haven’t made less than 100k since year one.
I have Buddies who went into trades were making 100k annually 3 years in.
No college, no debt, and no wasted time learning basket weaving… most college grads don’t use their degrees and end up making far less than their education. I have no idea why anyone would spend more on education than what they will ever make annually with said degree.
While I agree wages are ridiculously high. For me it’s because I get called in all hours of the night and work 2700-3000 hrs annually.
