Be very afraid . If this is a very large company , know one knows you like your senior Leaders. Unless it’s a brand new person coming in, they may not need you. A new employee may need you to get them up to speed. Someone shifting into that position will not as they already understand cross functional dynamics and culture. They will be looking to come in and show their worth which sometimes means saving the company money. If you work remotely or have a hybrid role, assume they think you do nothing for the company. You need to prove their worth unfortunately. If you are Hybrid come in more so you can be face to face more often. I know that sucks but do it . Volunteer for something beneficial to their adjustment . Prepare a slide or two on how you make a difference at the company. What you do add value that no one else does. One slide for your weekly schedule . Please add everything. All of it. Hire ups often discuss things you will never hear about or find out when it to late. Your Department Head may have left because of a “Restructuring” being planned. Good Luck
I wish I some anwser for you

Can you become the advocate for your team? Just remember to do the research, presentations to your uppers, and keep the emotions out of it. Employers value facts, not usually personal feelings. If you can present the facts in a logical way and tie that in to profit margins, they will listen.
