Legit. Whoever is running those projects didn’t want you on them.
I can’t possibly express how subjective creative leads are about what and who they think are good. Sooooo many times do we get a new head honcho that doesn’t understand our corner of the business, chasing Cannes awards. Pushing out creatives that do good solid work and have great relationships with our clients, because it doesn’t fit their image… then everything falls apart because our clients don’t see their vision.
Never overthink it. Know your value, and know people suck
This really resonates with me. My boss recently left for another opportunity and that’s really changed the dynamic. He loved our work ethic and constantly advocated for us to be on great projects. With him gone, we feel a bit invisible. And raising our hand for these other opportunities is where these recent issues have occurred. I do think the trick is to not get in my head about it and just try to have fun with the opportunities I do get.
This happened to me even after rounds of work. Turns out that work continued, we weren’t told, then won awards later. Super fun!
Classic Leo Burnett
Honestly, it might be a sign you’re on the chopping block. Keep your eyes open and document everything just in case.
I guess? I dunno, agencies are pretty good at covering their butts with who and how they lay people off. You’re not going to win a suit by documenting that someone promised you a project and then changed their mind.
I’d probably spend my time raising my hand for other opportunities, introducing myself to CDs if I have nothing to do, over-delivering where I can and, if I’m really worried, ask the resourcing manager point-blank if there’s anything I can work on.
That’s always served me better than paranoid thinking or trying to get out before they can get you, but what do I know?
I would be cautious. It can be politics, it could because they’re waiting to give you something else that’s anticipated or it can be because they don’t trust you and are looking to replace with. The best thing you can do is try to advocate for yourself.
Not a great situation. I’ve been there.
Are you getting other projects just not fun, high-visibility, high-potential projects? If so that’s at least some job security, but still maybe a sign that someone in power doesn’t think you can crack the good work.
I’d start interviewing, and in the meantime focus on either developing a great relationship w someone gcd or above at your agency you respect or even directly asking the creative leader on these projects for their guidance on what you can do to get at bats on the big projects and prove yourself. Not defensively but confidently, like you want to learn and work but also like you believe in yourself and will rise to the occasion if and when you get the chance
I wouldn’t take it personal but you could ask to toss some ideas in the hat despite not being resourced officially on it. That’ll mean added work but might be worth it to show them what you got.
Also, briefs are usually on the server so you could just go ahead and concept on it, then share with the CDs.
Just don’t let your other projects slip and make sure the CDs and resource manager know you’re doing it in your spare time.
This happened to me and my partner. We were laid off a couple months later. The day we just finished a project actually.
