I think this is a great conversation to have with your manager. Trying to figure out how your coworkers/supervisors see the progression of the role could help you get a clearer picture. And it might be a path you build yourself, but it's helpful to hear what others think too!
This is definitely something I need to do, just to work out what is expected of me in my current role, and what I need to do to progress
Back in my day, you clocked in, did your job, and promotions followed like clockwork. Now? Feels like you need a side hustle, a podcast, and a LinkedIn following just to get noticed.
It is crazy how much the expectations have increased just to be noticed
A lot of the normal career ladders have been reshaped, often not by design but just out of chaos. Jobs have been eliminated and tasks have been combined. What used to be a few jobs could now be dumped on one person, and so on. In my role I suppose there's a path forward, but determining how clear it is might be difficult. Things are uncertain, I think that's the most benign way of putting it.
It is really hard to map progression at the moment because I do feel like I take on a lot of merged job roles (not a bad thing just hard to track what I need to do)
If there is a clear path, nobody has shown it to me. I’m fine where I’m at right now, but it would be nice to know if they urge struck me, I’d know what to do. It does depend a lot on the supervisors and leadership if they will be any help in that or just string you along.
Yeah it definitely helps if you have a clear working relationship with your manager and can have that specific conversation
I used to feel there was a path—like a ladder. Now it feels more like a maze. I am figuring it out as I go, but I do miss the clarity.
It definitely feels like a maze to me too, everyone is just trying to figure out how to get through
