Not in that practice but know folks in that group at my former firm. From what I heard it’s largely tax planning work for UHNW individuals and family offices. My bet is that you will have to tolerate the tax work if you want to be successful at a large firm. The solo/smaller type of practices may have more variety of things outside of tax given the demographics you are serving.
Currently in the practice and really enjoying it. Hours-wise, the general target is around 2000 like most other groups, but there’s a pretty mutual understanding that planners often don’t actually hit that because the workflow is different.
I worked in big law corporate practice for a little over a year and lateraled into T&E. Might be firm dependent but the group is super busy and is definitely not a dying practice, in fact, many of the T&E clients use the firm for other things as well so the firm actually invests quite a bit in the T&E group. Hours are stable, very little work after 6pm, almost no weekend work, although senior associates/counsel are probably alot busier than me, a junior associate. I’m sure you’d be able to pick it up quickly if you already know abt transfer tax and GST tax, as that is the brunt of what we do
Got it — last year I barely hit 1,800. That was on the low end for me due to some health issues, but hopefully this year I’ll be closer to 2,000.

It seems to be a dying practice at most large firms, just fyi.
That's fine. I've made enough money where I'd only probably want to do it a few yrs at a firm and then start my own firm at some point anyway. Really just looking for best way to get a foot in the door
