Pros and cons of chief of staff positions? I am trying to exit consulting for better WLB and not sure if chief of staff type role makes sense

Find out what job the previous COS moved to. That will provide a clue.

You’re either treated as a 1A or a Secretary and it’s almost impossible to predict which way it will go until you are actually in the role.

it could be very strategic or very admin heavy - either way I would not count WLB as a plus of this type of role - your job is to extend and multiply the CEOs bamdwidth

fair point although less frequent, it would likely be more reactive and maybe less predictable/controllable. Probably depends on specific context.

Speaking from experience, it was a tremendous experience of learning, networking, and building credentials in that particular functional area. Highly recommended if you are still relatively young in your career. If you are farther along in your career, unless it’s supporting a C-suite executive of a large and established brand, I would not recommend it for reasons mentioned by other fish in previous comments

If anyone wants to join a boutique HR & Talent Advisory consulting firm, Kincentric is hiring for an Associate Partner role! Location doesn’t really matter, but preferably in IL, NY, or ATL.
