Yeah, I'm in the process, but it's basically taken me a year of networking in secret and is only just now happening.
I've seen other people in this time just go tell their current partner up front that they want to leave, and of course they get laid off. There's no incentive for the partner to keep you if you're just actively expressing discontent and not doing anything about it.
This seems fairly obvious, no? 🤔
Clearly there is something else going on here. People don’t get laid off if they are a strong resource with good history, utilization, etc just for trying to switch groups.
Never leave your current role without something lined up. That's for internal and external moves
Why would anyone be actively expressing discontent? You need to be good at your current job if anyone is going to consider investing in you to make you good in another capability, so be sure you're conveying all this as a positive. Eg "I feel like I've learned so much in Team A and am looking at where I can apply those skills while also supporting a growing part of the firm where I think my talents would be useful. I'd like your support in getting on some projects with Team B". Doesn't have to be confrontational. Any typically doesn't have to be all or nothing.
Or you could, you know, be transparent about wanting to switch practices and ask your current leadership for support?
I was told by an internal recruiter even if your current relationship partner doesn’t approve, he/she can’t fully stop you from moving over if the Partner and hiring manger for your potential practice approve and fully support you. Plus if your snapshots are at next level and metrics are great, it’d be tougher for you to get laid off right on the spot. Navigate the waters carefully, 🐠.
K1 is right. It's also important for CRT outcomes.
